Storm Damage
What Does Hail Damage Look Like?
Possible hail impacts can appear as bruised spots, granule loss, dents, cracked materials, or damage to soft metals—but appearance varies by material and storm.
Clues can differ by roof type
On asphalt shingles, an impact may disturb surface granules or leave a soft-looking mark. On metal components, dents can be easier to see. Tile and other materials can crack or chip, though every mark should be assessed in context.
A single mark is rarely enough to diagnose a roof from the ground. The location, distribution, material condition, and storm history matter.
Do not confuse wear with impact
Normal aging can produce granules in gutters, discoloration, thermal cracking, or surface variation. Wind, debris, and installation details may also create damage that looks different from hail.
- Compare multiple slopes and components.
- Record the date of the weather event.
- Do not remove material to investigate.
- Request a documented assessment if damage is suspected.
Protect the home first
If water is entering the home, prioritize safe temporary protection and professional repair. Coverage and payment decisions are made by the insurance carrier under the policy; visual signs alone do not establish an outcome.
